Bob Wian entered Glendale High School when the Great Depression began in 1929. [10]: Inside the back cover When his father`s furniture store went bankrupt,[11] Wian washed the dishes in the school canteen to pay for lunch. [12] Since he is not a devoted student – he never took homework with him:[12] D1 – Classmates were the least likely to choose Wian to succeed. [13] However, his father`s commercial failure and the doubts of his classmates led Wian to success. [13] An earlier franchise briefly operated in the early 21st century with three Big Boy restaurants in Bangkok and one in the southern seaside city of Pattaya, but the deal ultimately failed because local Thai customers did not understand or enjoy American food at the time. [265] Restaurants have adapted the menu to local taste. Some Thai customers regarded Big Boy statues as religious icons or had superstitions about them. [265] [266] Wian opened a second drive-in in Burbank in 1938[14] and introduced drive-in sidewalk service at both locations. During World War II, Wian experienced a shortage of meat and labor, and one of the four bobsleighs that were in operation at the time was closed. Shortly after the war,[14] in 1946, Wian Robert C. founded Wian Enterprises to take over his catering business.[14] [20] Marriott, which gradually grew from a restaurant company to a hotel chain (now the world`s largest accommodation company), left the struggling company. In 1987, they sold the big Boy business and rights to the Elias brothers, longtime Michigan franchisees and friends of Bob Wian. The restrictions have forced Michigan high schools and colleges to suspend face-to-face classes for three weeks, while entertainment companies such as casinos, movie theaters, and bowling alleys are also closed.
Bob Wian developed rules and philosophies about how Big Boy should work. In addition to (building) the Big Boy Hamburger, he attributes most of his success and that of his franchisees to compliance with these rules. [72] His basic principles of catering were: “To serve the best food, at moderate prices, in a pristine environment, with courtesy and hospitality.” [96] [83] He believed that “the customer is always right” and asked employees “if a food is not satisfactory, to return it with pleasure and apologize for the error.” [11] Wian said he has five basic rules for growing his business: “Be a good place to work, sell, buy and invest in it. And be a good neighbor in the community. [97] He also attributed growth to “competent management and conservative policies of not trying to accommodate more people than can be served, or opening more restaurants than can be served.” [97] If a disruption occurred in a restaurant, such as a new manager or renovation, Wian would postpone advertising until operations returned to its standards. In addition to the big boy name, the concept, menu and mascot “Big Boy” were originally licensed to a large number of regional franchise owners (listed in the next section). Since many of the early franchisees were already in the restaurant business when they joined Big Boy, “Big Boy” was added to the franchisee`s name when the Big Boy burger was added to the franchisee`s menu.
In this sense, it is confusing to refer to a chain, since each named franchisee was itself a chain and Big Boy could be considered a chain of chains. People tend to know Big Boy not only as Big Boy, but as the franchise they lived on, like Bob`s Big Boy in California, Shoney`s Big Boy in the South, or Frisch`s Big Boy in much of Ohio, Marc`s Big Boy in the Upper Midwest, among many others. In August 1936, Wian quit his job at the Rite Spot and sold his 1933 DeSoto Roadster for $300.[15][13][18] to pay for the deposit of a 10-stool hamburger stand in Glendale called The Pantry. [Note 4] He cleaned the place until it “shined like a brand new penny,”[13] borrowed $50 from his father for meat and supplies,[12] After J4, and reopened as Bob`s Pantry. Six months later, Wian assembled his special two-story burger. Created as a joke for a customer who wanted something different, the novel Hamburger began to draw the company. But what`s the story behind this classic restaurant chain? What sets this restaurant apart from other burgers and fries? To this day, guests can enjoy double-decker burgers, freshly cut fries, and milkshakes at Big Boy restaurants, and in some places they can even do so by looking at the vintage cars that once flooded the parking lot of the original Big Boy. Burger and vintage car lovers can also spend nights cruising at other Southern California Big Boy locations in Northridge, Glendale and Sun Valley on various evenings of the month. It`s like a journey through time. Wian was impressed by the inspiration. Instead of cutting his hamburger rolls in half, he cut them in half. He layered the rolls with two burger patties, a slice of cheese, a salad, and a red sauce, and the two-story burger was born – the first of its kind. Also in the 1950s, Bob Wian launched an employee franchise program that allowed his best employees to own their own Bob`s Big Boy restaurants, starting with Phoenix. Wherever Wian turned around, he made other people rich. In the end, it didn`t work when Big Boy shrank to less than 100 locations and filed for bankruptcy in 2000. Today, a few more owners later, and a private equity firm has control of Big Boy and again deposits new franchises and adds new restaurants. Cincinnati`s Frisch`s continues to run Big Boys, while longtime franchisee Shoney abandoned the brand in the 1980s. Pittsburgh`s Eat`n Park continues to thrive without the Big Boy brand.
Maybe in the future, more people will be able to try the original two-story burger, the Big Boy. We`re still home to the Big Boy®, the original double-decker that made us famous in 1936, and we`ve added other favorites along the way, like the Slim Jim® and the Classic Blockbuster Breakfast. The oldest Big Boy restaurant in the country is Bob`s Big Boy in Burbank, California, which was built in 1949. Some say the building`s café style is modern, while others say the building, designed by architect Wayne McAllister, is one of the first Googie-style buildings in Los Angeles. Big Boy began in 1936 as a hamburger store in Glendale, California, called Bob`s Pantry. The restaurant first gained popularity when founder Bob Wian cut a hamburger bun into three sections and placed two patties in between, creating the first two-story burger or “Big Boy.” This burger, which is still considered the trademark of the franchise, immediately became a hit and led wian to rename the restaurant “Bob`s Big Boy”. Big Boy quickly gained national attention, and in 1952, the Elias brothers were the first to open a franchise for the company in Hazel Park, Michigan, more than half of the United States.
