To be clear, fuckboy has many definitions – so much so that the word is less interesting for what it means than for the reason it seems to host so many (often mutually exclusive) claims of meaning. And while some of these claims are older than others, none possess universal authority, perhaps even fewer sales. Sales describes how smartphone apps have intensified the dynamics of hookup culture: “A `fuckboy` is a young man who sleeps with women with no intention of having a relationship with them or maybe even getting them out after sex. He is a womanizer, a particularly insensitive womanizer and a kind of loser. One of a boy. You have heard about it. Maybe even one. In the event that you have dated several people, you may have had sour relationship endings where you have been the recipient of hate rants and spitting from the victims you have broken inconsolably. Because that`s what fuckboys do. They confuse your feelings. Fuckboys often pretend to be looking for a relationship. They might even have a few good times drinking wine and eating a new catch before their true intentions become clear. Playful and single at heart, a fuckboy has a universal law – never be bound.
When asked what he meant, Killer Mike replied, “You can identify the fuckboys. Because they always do. Just the dumbest, weirdest and lame ever. In an explanatory note on Genius, one commentator glosses over the lines in an equally general way, raving: “The weak lame like have no chance against [Run the Jewels]! A fuckboy is recognizable by his offensive actions. You know one when you see one. He is always “ready to hang around”, but we do not know when he is actually available or what he wants to do. It`s hard to set it up for plans, and every time you do, you initiate and it`s completely its time. You lean back to have time for him, but it seems like you`re always a last-minute idea after the fact. When you first meet him, the attraction is instantaneous.
He gives you the attention you want and knows exactly what to say to get you home. Perversely, all this uncertainty leads us to believe that there must be something we need to be sure of. The further Fuckboy moves away from his origins – whatever they may be – the more his supporters insist that he means one thing or another, or, as in Massey`s disagreement with Sales, one thing but not another. Urban Dictionary, where visitors vote on the accuracy of users` explanations of slang terms, offers nearly 300 attempts to define Fuckboy. Some overlap, but without any real coherence, suggesting more of a family resemblance to Wittgenstein, as they only share the mocking power of the term itself. The oldest and most popular definition dates back to 2004 and is simply “a person who is a weak donkey who does not fear”, suggesting that he does not adhere to masculine norms. Don`t expect the undercover to text you again as soon as they get what they want. There is a difference between casual sex (see my tips for casual sex) and someone. Manipulating and lying to get what you want has to be exhausting and not rewarding because of the mixed signals you give to your partner. Massey is not alone, nor does she alone think her attitude to the term is the right one. Although the fuckboy plays a role in different language communities, it is difficult to trace a single source.
These multiple stories – and the ambiguities that arise when they meet – make it difficult to attribute a stable and coherent meaning to the term. But something in the word itself inspires strong claims, leading to attempts to assert its meaning once and for all. Instead of simply defending wickedness, fuckboy encourages those who use it to discuss what that wickedness entails. Perhaps this is precisely because without an understandable story, it happens that fuckboy represents what those who use it find most despicable. This gave it a hyperspecificity that makes it difficult to discuss in general. Articles and explanations are often presented in the form of lists, always lists of signs: “15 tragic signs that you are dealing with a fuckboy”, “10 signs that he is a fuckboy”, “7 signs that he is a fuckboy”. It`s a kind of joke, or at least a structure for something like jokes, but it indicates the truth of the word: it`s easier to talk about examples than essences. No matter what you buy, there is always a preview option. The same goes for girls. You want to see what is offered to you unpacked. So don`t hesitate to ask them for nude photos, whether it`s random shots of body parts or their portraits in the studio. However, remember that she has the same right to ask you for the same kind of photos, and f*ckboys respect that right, so be prepared to undress.
The definition of fuckboys was really revealed on social media and really took on a negative connotation. The videos flooded YouTube and TikTok and exposed this behavior. A good insult does not need to be developed. We feel it before we understand it. This is why some insults resonate even when we don`t know who or what they defame. Consider the strange case of Fuckboy, who plays a central role in Nancy Jo Sales` controversial article “Tinder and the Dawn of the `Dating Apocalypse`” in this month`s Vanity Fair. Here are two true statements about the word: Everyone knows what fuckboy means. And no one knows what fuckboy means. While it may not have been important for Run the Jewels to define the term, it must have been important for some of the band`s listeners — and for those who hear the word in other contexts.
If not, why did so many people turn to Google for a clearer explanation? Popular searches include “what is fuckboy”, “definition fuckboy”, “define fuckboy” and queries for the term (and spellings “fuckboi” and “fuccboi”) in the urban dictionary. While some fuckboys are obvious, others may appear under a series of disguises, which is why the actual definition of this nickname can be fuzzy. If Sales and Massey agree on anything, it`s that a fuckboy is the worst guy, or at least the one who represents the worst trends of the present moment.
