This course is mandatory for California peace officers who have been promoted, appointed, or placed in a first-level supervisory position. The California Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training requires that a peace commissioner appointed to a first-level supervisory position within 12 months, or an officer assigned to a quasi-surveillance position, take the course if authorized by their respective departments. This course is intended to prepare the first-level supervisor to lead within their respective law enforcement agency. Topics covered in this course include: responsibility; communication within a diverse workforce; Conflict; Consultation; critical incident management; employee relations; ethical decision-making; employee evaluation; internal investigations; leadership styles and behaviours; power and authority; Recognition and documentation of employee performance; role identification and transition; stress management; team building; employee training; Securities. The $25 million facility, funded by the voter-approved Measure M, is the first university academy to be certified by the California Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.). It offers a regular 24-week core course, a 17-week core course for special researchers, continuing education courses and hosts a leadership and ethics institute. The course examines current demographic trends, dynamics, and interactions of California`s multifaceted minority groups and subcultures regarding the criminal justice system in a free society. This course is designed to provide the necessary elements to examine and learn the fundamentals of leadership and to identify and distinguish issues that affect police integrity, public trust and loyalty.

It analyzes the law enforcement agency`s evaluation policy. It evaluates the current system and examines how assertive leadership affects the behavior and performance of subordinates. He also teaches the preparation and formulation of employee performance appraisals. It compares and evaluates the role of the supervisor in the disciplinary proceedings. In addition, it examines the relationship between leadership and effective communication. The difference between civil and criminal liability is examined and discussed along with the concept and application of community-based policing and problem-solving. Pass / No Pass.
