The working group considered that a voluntary fee schedule – indicative for lawyers and clients – should go hand in hand with the Practice Guidelines. We strongly believed that the client should have a complete picture of what to expect when working with a lawyer. We had also hoped that the Law Society would feel comfortable with the concept and support the announcement of the timeline as part of promoting public awareness, but in the end, the task force went ahead alone with the initiative. Meetings were held with members of the Bar Association practising in various centres across the province to receive and consider comments and suggestions. For simplicity, these meetings were held immediately after the Law Society meetings on the guidelines for real estate transactions and amendments to the Code of Professional Conduct. An online fee survey was conducted to better understand the range of fees charged in the province. The final product is the list of fees, which you can consult by clicking on the link below. It is important to remember that lawyers are in no way bound by the fees proposed in the table. The Board reviews and approves the Corporation`s budget, including the Schedule of Fees, for the following year at its April meeting. Note: The licensing fees charged are the same as those charged by your Law Society Association to members of the Law Society of New Brunswick who require a licence to practise in their home country.

In addition to legal fees, there are many other fees, expenses, and taxes that clients want to know about and prepare for. The working group provided this calculator to help lawyers calculate them and present them to their clients in a convenient format. Fill in a few fields at the top of the calculator, edit the withdrawal tab and you get a 2-page summary of the transaction cost comparing your fees offered to the proposed fee schedule. Print it out to check with your customer or email it. We invite you through your comments and suggestions on this calculator (click here). We do not have the authority to consider the amount of fees charged by a lawyer. However, we set standards that our members must follow. One of our standards is professional fees and we affirm that all fees charged by lawyers must be fair and reasonable. Annual membership fee for members called before May 1, 2017 – $2,960.10 (HST included) Some lawyers offer free or one-time payment advice. You can call the law firm to find out if they offer this.

Reinstatement by a member suspended for non-disciplinary reasons If you pursue a case without winning or costing and you do not win your case, you are generally responsible for your opponent`s legal fees and your own legal fees, but not for their fees. To protect yourself against this risk, you can purchase insurance before starting a case without gain or cost. * Note – $1,725.00 (including HST) payable on or after September 1 and $1,725.00 (HST included) payable on or after March 1. Lawyers in Scotland may also act speculatively and not charge fees unless the case is successful. This is often referred to as a no-winner, no-cost basis. This is particularly relevant for legal proceedings, although it is also done regularly in home sales (no free sale).

3. Late enrolment fees for continuing vocational training (Rule 3-31(3)(b)) 1. Retired Membership Application Fee (Rule 2-4(2)(b) [Retired Members]) Application for admission of a person admitted to practise in another province or territory of Canada The Law Society does not set fees. Each company calculates what it deems appropriate for the work performed. Your lawyer can purchase insurance for you after the event, so you can pay the other party`s legal fees if you lose. It can also cover your lawyer`s costs. You may receive legal help to pay some or all of your legal fees. For more information about the complaint procedure, see Making a complaint against a lawyer. 5. Recourse (Rule 2-74(8) [Review of Failure of Action]): It is also worth considering whether you should ask your lawyer to send you regular (e.g., monthly) invoices. This can help you improve the budget if you`re worried about getting a big bill once the job is done.

It is also not uncommon for lawyers to ask clients to pay money in advance or before the work is completed to cover their costs. Sometimes your lawyer will have to pay other expenses, such as medical reports, court fees, or registration fees. So, when budgeting, remember that you are also responsible for these costs. A reasonable fee takes into account the amount of work and time spent; the required level of expertise, responsibility and supervision; the length, number and importance of documents to be prepared or read; the place and circumstances where the work will be carried out; the urgency of the case and the amount of money or value of the property concerned.
